What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a common condition where your eyes do not produce enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to inflammation and discomfort. Tears are essential for maintaining the health of the eye's front surface and providing clear vision. When tear production and drainage are not balanced, it can result in dry eye syndrome.

Causes of Dry Eye

Various factors can cause dry eye, including:

  • Age
  • Exposure to wind, smoke, or dry air
  • Prolonged use of screens
  • Certain medications
  • Conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders
  • Wearing contact lenses for extended periods
  • Hormonal changes

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Irritated, red-eyes
  • A sensation of burning or stinging in the eyes
  • Intermittent blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • A feeling of having sand or grit in the eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Eye fatigue

Our Approach to Dry Eye Treatment

At Danville Eye Center, we employ a multifaceted approach to manage and treat dry eye syndrome. Our strategy includes lifestyle adjustments to reduce factors that contribute to dryness. We prescribe artificial tears and lubricating eye drops to relieve and maintain tear film stability.

For more persistent cases, we offer advanced treatments like Systane® iLux®, designed to enhance tear quality by targeting the underlying causes of dry eye. This innovative treatment uses thermal pulsation technology to unclog meibomian glands and improve oil flow, reducing tear evaporation and alleviating dryness.
